The Miracle

In 2009 Mattheus Vianna was born with Annular Pancreas, a rare condition affecting the appendix that causes serious abdominal pain and caused him to vomit constantly. By the time he was nearly 4, he weighed only 20lbs and was not expected to live long. Mattheus’ doctors considered surgery, but given his weight they feared he would not survive. With this news, his family began praying for a miracle.

Concurrently, Fr. Marcelo Tenorio, was encouraging members of his parish to pray for the beatification of Carlo Acutis, and in 2013 he obtained a relic from Carlo’s mother. He invited Catholics to a Mass and prayer service where the relic would be on display and give attendees the opportunity to ask for Acutis’ intercession. Mattheus’ mother, Luciana Vianna, heard of this mass and created (and prayed) a novea for Acutis’ intercession and prepared her son to ask Acutis to pray for his healing.

“On October 12, 2013, seven years after Carlo’s death, a child, affected by a congenital malformation, when it was his turn to touch the picture of the future blessed, expressed a singular wish, like a prayer: ‘I wish I could stop vomiting so much.’ Healing began immediately, to the point that the physiology of the organ in question changed” Fr. Gori told Italian media.

That evening, Mattheus ate everything on his plate, and didn’t vomit. He ate the next day and the following as well. Doctors performed several tests and discovered he had been cured.

“Until he was 4 years old I carried him like a baby in the stroller, so Matheus is living proof of the cure, he doesn’t need to say anything else. I remember that on the day of the cure, Matheus, and my father were in line. My father asked to take it in his arms and I explained what a relic was and that people kissed and made a request. I explained that the relic was a little piece of Carlo Acutis and that he could ask for whatever he wanted. I remember that he asked: ‘Is it real Mom?’ My father and I had already agreed to ask for Matheus’ cure, but as he was on his lap he came in front and said a prayer”, recalls Luciana (Translated by Google)

This miracle was officially approved by the Vatican on February 22, 2020 and is the first miracle attributed to Saint Carlo Acutis.
